Mangaluru: Two working professionals from Mangaluru have fallen victim to elaborate online job scams, resulting in a combined financial loss of over ₹10 lakh. In the first case, a woman searching for part-time opportunities received a WhatsApp message on June 25 claiming to be from an HR assistant at the NSE Exchange. Lured by the promise of earning ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 per day, she was directed to join a Telegram group and begin completing "work tasks" in exchange for small initial payments. Soon, she was asked to transfer money for "trade tasks" and ended up paying ₹6.5 lakh over a span of three days to various accounts. When no promised returns were credited, she realised the scam and filed a complaint with the Mangaluru Rural police.
In a separate incident, a medical professional was cheated of ₹4.2 lakh after being contacted by a woman claiming to be from NMC Hospital, Dubai. The scam began with a phone call and a job offer email, followed by a series of payments for registration, profile verification, DHA licence, and NOC charges. Despite transferring large sums between June 13 and June 24, the victim grew suspicious when asked to pay an additional ₹2.6 lakh. Upon verifying with peers, the complainant discovered the offer was fake and approached the Kankanady Town police. Authorities have launched investigations into both cases and urged the public to remain cautious against online job frauds.
