Mangalore/Bangalore: In response to rising communal tensions following two recent murders in Dakshina Kannada, the Karnataka government has swiftly formed a Special Action Force (SAF) to prevent and control further incidents. According to a government order dated May 28, the SAF will be headquartered in three sensitive districts; Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga, and Udupi, where the situation remains tense. The newly formed force comprises 248 officers and personnel drawn from the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF), including a senior officer of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) rank who will lead the operation.
The government’s move comes amid growing public concern and heightened communal sensitivity in coastal Karnataka. The SAF is seen as a proactive step to restore normalcy and ensure swift law enforcement in vulnerable regions. The remaining 376 personnel from the ANF will continue their current duties for the next three years, as per the order. Officials say the newly allocated SAF units will be equipped and trained specifically to handle communal unrest, aiming to curb escalation and maintain peace in the state.
