Karnataka’s pride and World Cup-winning Kho-Kho players M K Gowtham from Maddur in Mandya district and Chaithra from Kurubur village in T. Narsipur taluk in Mysuru district were in national kho-kho men and women teams respectively have expressed their disappointment over the lack of cash awards from the State Government. Despite their stellar performance on the global stage and bringing honor to the country, the players revealed that their achievements in indigenous sports have been met with little to no financial recognition. The players voiced their concerns during a felicitation event organized by Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries, H.D. Kumaraswamy. Speaking on the occasion, Kumaraswamy emphasized the need for Karnataka to support athletes representing traditional Indian sports like Kho-Kho, which often receive less limelight compared to mainstream sports.

Calling for urgent action, Kumaraswamy urged the State Government to implement cash rewards and other incentives for players excelling in indigenous sports. "These athletes have made the nation proud, yet they are overlooked in terms of recognition and support. It’s high time we celebrate all sports equally," he said. The plea has ignited discussions among sports enthusiasts and the public, who argue that promoting indigenous games is vital for preserving cultural heritage and encouraging youth participation. Many hope the State Government will take swift action to address this disparity and honor its champions appropriately.
