The decision to rename Bengaluru City University after Dr. Manmohan Singh, announced by Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah on July 2, 2025.
This reflects Singh's legacy as a key architect of India's economic liberalization in 1991, a move credited with transforming India into a global economic player, as supported by a 2011 World Bank report on India's GDP growth from 1.1% to 7.5% post-reforms.
This renaming, despite Singh not being a native Kannadiga, challenges the regional norm of honoring local figures, possibly signaling a political strategy by Siddaramaiah's Congress-led government to align with national figures.
